amal ulat.: Phrase meaning "let us be joined" on Taresia. Taymon said this phrase before the joining ceremony between he and his three brides. ("Favorite Son" [VGR #62]).
Amalthea Rex, U.S.S.: Federation starship, Brande-class frigate, Starfleet registry NCC-9003. The Amalthea Rex was built by Starfleet in 2291 at Gibraltar on Terra. (Officer's Manual [FASA TNG]).
Amanda.: Formerly Amanda Grayson, the wife of Ambassador Sarek and mother to Spock. Amanda Grayson was a teacher and student of linguistics in Colorado Springs on Earth when she met Sarek, who was an attaché to the Vulcan embassy. They married and returned to Vulcan, and had a child, Spock. On the occasion of Spock being promoted to first officer of the Enterprise, she gave him the gift of a brown dress shirt, an attempt to get him to socialize more off-duty. Amanda came aboard the Enterprise in 2267 with her husband, who was attending the Babel Conference. Amanda assisted during Spock's reeducation following his fal-tor-pan refusion in 2285. She tried especially to help her son rediscover the human portion of his personality. She died in 2293. Amanita muscaria.: Poisonous mushroom native to Terra. The amanita muscaria has a red or orange cap with white patches. If ingested it can cause profuse sweating, convulsions and even death. ("Heroes and Demons" [VGR #12]).
Amantes, David.: Starfleet crewman first class who served on the starship Equinox. Amantes was killed when that vessel was besieged by extra-dimensional aliens while trapped in the Delta Quadrant. ("Equinox" [Pocket VGR Adaptation]).
Amar, I.K.S.: Klingon battleship, K't'inga-class battlecruiser, commanded by Barak. The Amar's squadron was destroyed in 2272 by the V'Ger cloud. ("The Motion Picture" [Movie #1]).

American Rover.: Space vessel that took part in the Belle Terre expedition in the 2270s, a privately owned pathfinder commanded by Smith & Glass, under J. Carpenter. ("Wagon Train to the Stars" [Pocket New Earth #1]).
American Sign Language.: Type of gestural communication originating on planet Terra. ("Loud as a Whisper" [TNG #32]; "Macrocosm" [VGR #54]).

Amerind-class.: Type of Federation starship, classified as a superscout. (Ships of the Star Fleet).
Amerind, U.S.S.: Federation starship, Amerind-class superscout, Starfleet registry NCC-626. First vessel in its class. (Ships of the Star Fleet).

Amiens, U.S.S.: Federation starship, Miranda-class heavy frigate, Starfleet registry NCC-1869. (Ships of the Star Fleet).
Amity, U.N.S.S.: Terran United Nations spaceship. In 2065 the Amity rescued a damaged Vulcan scout vessel in the Sol system. This courageous act helped to cement the fledgling alliance between Terra and Vulcan and paved the way for diplomatic relations between the two worlds, following the official first contact in Montana in 2063. Andorians.: Passionate and violent humanoid civilization from the Federation member planet Andor (also known as Andoria), characterized by pale blue skin and twin antennae on their heads. Andorians are extremely sensitive to alcohol, which poisons them quickly. Human first contact with Andorians occurred in 2151 when the Enterprise NX-01 visited the Vulcan monastery on P'Jem and attempted to free the Vulcan clerics, who were being held hostage by an Andorian security team, led by Shran. Andorian delegates, including Ambassador Shras and his aide Thelev were transported to Babel by the starship Enterprise in 2266. Andorian marriages generally require four people. An Andorian was an inmate on Elba II in 2268. An Andorian man was among the Thralls of Triskelion that were captured by the Providers and forced to fight in their arena. There was an abandoned Andorian colony on the border of Sector 221-G in Federation space. The Nelkarites scavenged the site, using components in their buildings on Nelkar. ("Journey to Babel" [TOS #44]; "The Gamesters of Triskelion" [TOS #46]; "The Survivors" [TNG #51]; "The Offspring" [TNG #64]; "Data's Day" [TNG #85]; "Prophet Motive" [DS9 #62]; "The Two-Front War" [Pocket NF #3]). The Andorian Thrall on Triskelion was played by Dick Crockett.
Andrachis, Shil.: Ssana. ("Shadows on the Sun" [Pocket TOS]).
Andrea.: Beautiful female android created by Roger Korby. Andrea was built using technology left over from the ancient "Old Ones" civilization that lived beneath the surface of Exo III. Korby used Andrea as a example of how android behaviors were superior to human emotions. Andrea destroyed herself along with the Kirk duplicate trying to eliminate the real Kirk. ("What Are Little Girls Made Of?" [TOS #9]). Played by Sherry Jackson.
Andrew's Star.: Star. ("Ill Wind" [DC TNG Ill Wind #1-4]).
android.: According to Webster's Twenty-Fourth Century Dictionary, Fifth Edition, an android is an automaton made to resemble a human being. The Old Ones of Exo II developed sophisticated androids, but the androids eventually destroyed their civilization, and caused the death of Dr. Roger Korby and his expedition when they discovered the technique of their creation. Some of the Exo III androids were also responsible for deaths on the starships Hood and Enterprise and the colony Midos V in 2267. The androids created by the Makers of the Andromeda galaxy were programmed to perform the menial tasks of their society, and one, Norman, escaped the death of the Maker empire to come to Mudd's Planet and create a new android population. In 2269 the immortal Flint attempted to build an android named Rayna Kapec to be his companion, but was unable to achieve this goal. Androids were created in 2268 by Sargon, Thalassa and Henoch aboard the Enterprise so that their minds could be transferred into robot bodies. Cyberneticist Noonien Soong, inspired by the concepts of Ira Graves, Richard Daystrom and Isaac Asimov, built several androids in the 2330's, including the finished models Data and Lore, although Lore was later proved defective. Commander Data, who currently serves as operations officer on the starship Enterprise-E, has strived to become more like his human shipmates. A legal decision handed down by Starfleet J.A.G. officer Phillippa Louvois in 2365 establishes that the android Data was indeed a sentient being, entitled to full constitutional protection as a citizen of the United Federation of Planets. A significant advance in android technology was made in 2366 when Data used a new submicron matrix transfer technology to build an android daughter, whom he named Lal. Andromeda Galaxy.: ("I, Mudd" [TOS #41]; "By Any Other Name" [TOS #50]).
Andromeda-class.: Type of Federation starship. (Conjecture). The name 'Andromeda-class' comes from the source of Michael Okuda's background info.
Andromeda, U.S.S.: Federation starship. ("The Wrath of Khan" [Pocket TOS #7]).
Andronesian encephalitis.: Disease. ("The Dauphin" [TNG #36]).
Androssi.: ("Cold Fusion" [Pocket SCE]). This species was named by Kieth R.A. DeCandido for his mother's maiden name Andreossi, part of his middle name.

Anetra.: Yaderan woman. ("Shadowplay" [DS9 #36]).
anetrizine.: Pharmaceutical. The EMH used 20 cc anetrizine to anesthesize Seven's cranial nerves. ("The Gift" [VGR])
Angel Falls.: Landmark in Venzuela on Earth. ("Family" [TNG #78]).
Angel I.: Planet. ("Angel One" [TNG #15])

Anij.: ("Insurrection" [Movie #9]). Played by Donna Murphy.
Anjoran biomimetic gel.: ("Firstborn").
Anjelica VII.: ("Reunion" [Pocket TNG HC #1]).
Ankari.: Intelligent species living in the Delta Quadrant. ("Equinox" [VGR]).
Anna.: ("Liaisons"). Played by Barbara Williams.
Annabelle series.: ("I, Mudd").
Annel.: ("Business As Usual").
Annie B.: Space vessel that took part in the Belle Terre expedition in the 2270s. ("Wagon Train to the Stars" [Pocket New Earth #1]).
Annobon, U.S.S.: Federation starship proposed during the 23rd century. This vessel's construction was cancelled, and it's registry was assigned to another vessel. (Technical Manual [Franz Joseph TOS]; Ships of the Star Fleet [Mastercom]). It's possible ships of these names were still built, of different classes and registry numbers. If built, this ship would have been Achernar-class, with the registry NCC-1752, according to the manuals.
Annorax.: Krenim, the captain of the Krenim time-ship. Annorax's mission is to restore the Krenim Imperium through the use of temporal incursions, effecting massive changes in the timeline to facilitate the expansion of his people. Annorax refused to give up until every Krenim colony and individual has been restored. Many of his crew thought Annorax had lost his objectivity and that his quest for perfection was unreal. Annorax attempted to erase Voyager from time in 2374. Annorax had been trying to restore the Krenim Imperium for the last 200 years ever since the erasure of the Rilnar race caused 50 million Krenim deaths. When Chakotay confronted him about the erradication of the Ram Izad species, Annorax told him that one species or a single life is insignificant. Annorax lost his wife during the second temporal incursion when the colony on Kyana Prime was eradicated, and all he has left of her is a lock of hair. He would not stop until he had restored Kyana Prime. ("Year of Hell" [VGR #76&77]). Played by Kurtwood Smith, who also played the Federation President in "The Undiscovered Country" [Movie #6] and Thrax in "Things Past" [DS9 #106].

Antares-class.: Type of Bajoran transport vessel. ("Ensign Ro" [TNG]). I'm not even going to get into the debate on just what exactly makes a ship Antares-class. The reference was included as a reference to the original Antares in "Charlie X" [TOS] by "Ensign Ro" writers, but the Bajoran ships are obviously not Starfleet surplus, and differ greatly from later Antares-class ships, which include the Corvallen freighter, Straleb patrol ship, Talarian freighter Batris, Maquis raider and Okona's Erstwhile.
Antares, U.S.S.: Federation starship, Starfleet registry NCC-501. Commanded by Captain Ramart. The Antares picked up Charles Evans on Thasia and transported him to the starship Enterprise to be taken home. The crew was frightened of the boy's powers, and after he was delivered, Charlie made a baffle plate on Antares disappear, allowing the engine's reaction to destroy the vessel. April.: Shuttlecraft on the starship Enterprise-D. ("Dogs of War" [DC TNG vol.2 #35]).
April, Robert T.: First captain of the starship Enterprise. April, a Terran space veteran, was the head of the Federation Starship Program in charge of the production of the Constitution-class vessels, of which the Enterprise was the first operational model, and was even given credit with coining the term "starship" during the design phase of the program, a term that has become a catchall for all warp capable craft. April assumed command of the ship when it was launched in 2245 on a rescue mission, and helmed the Enterprise's first five year mission of deep-space exploration. He was married to the ship's CMO, Dr. Sarah Poole-April in 2245. April passed command of the Enterprise over to Christopher Pike in 2251. April retired from Starfleet in 2269 at the rank of Commodore, and became a civilian liaison to Starfleet. ("The Counter-Clock Incident" [TAS #22]; "A Flag Full of Stars" [Pocket TOS #55]; "Final Frontier" [Pocket TOS Giant #3]; "Best Destiny" [Pocket TOS HC]; "Flesh of My Flesh" [Marvel EV #1]; "Nor Iron Bars a Cage" [Marvel EV #4]; "Futures" [Marvel EV #12-14]; "Thanatos" [Marvel EV #16]; "Nemesis" [Marvel EV #17]). Played by the voice of James Doohan. The photo of April in Okuda's Star Trek Encyclopedia was that of Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry.
April, Sarah.: First chief medical officer of the starship Enterprise. Sarah was drafted unwillingly to serve on the Enterprise away from a veterinary assignment on a colony, although she grew to love her new position as CMO, and her captain, Robert April, whom she married in 2245. Sarah is known throughout the Federation as a pioneer in deep-space and interplanetary medicine, mostly from her experience on the Enterprise. ("Final Frontier" [Pocket TOS Giant #3]; "The Counter-Clock Incident" [TAS #22]). Played by the voice of Nichelle Nichols.
Apsac.: Malon tanker designed and controlled by Marssi. The Apsac had the best survivability profile of any Malon waste tanker, with a sixty percent survival rate among core workers. In 2376 the Apsac was assaulted by a Hirogen predator ship, but survived by destroying that vessel by venting their theta irradiated waste sludge at the ship. During the battle, Controller Marssi discovered an Iconian gateway which led to the Europa Nova system in the Bajor sector of the Alpha Quadrant. She ordered the contents of her vessel waste matter jettisoned there, thinking it to be a perfect solution to her planet's growing santitation situation. A Hirogen hunter later murdered the entire crew of the Apsac. ("Demons of Air and Darkness" [Pocket DS9 Gateways]).
aquatic lab.: ("Genesis" [TNG #171]).
aqueduct systems.: ("Birthright" [TNG #142&143]).
Aquino.: Ensign assigned to Starbase Deep Space Nine. Aquino was killed in 2369 by Neela, a Bajoran religious extremist. Aquino caught her planning an escape route for an attempted assassination of Vedek Bariel. She killed Aquino and vaporized his body in a power transfer conduit to cover the crime. ("In the Hands of the Prophets" [DS9 #20]).
Aquitaine, U.S.S.: Federation starship, a scout vessel. ("Children of Chaos" [DC TNG vol.2 #59]; "Mother of Madness" [DC TNG vol.2 #60]; "Brothers in Darkness" [DC TNG vol.2 #61]). The drawing of the Aquitaine was based in the triangular saucer concept drawing of the Nova-class pictured in the TNG Technical Manual.
