THE TREKKER'S GALACTOPEDIA
by CAPTAIN MIKE

N SECTION 2: Ng through Nz.

Ngame Nebula.
Interstellar cloud of dust and gas. The Enterprise-D passed the Ngame Nebula en route to its mission on Evadne IV in 2367. The ship's sensors discovered the apparent presence of a Class-M planet in a T-tauri type star system within the cloud. While investigating the planet, the Enterprise-D encountered a wormhole that rendered the crew unconscious for approximately thirty seconds. This nebula is the home of the reclusive Paxans. ("Clues" [TNG]).

Ngultor.
Spacegoing organism which was encountered by the starship Enterprise in 2254. The Ngultor was a giant organic mass of linked lifeforms that infected and dissolved the critical computer elements of passing atsrships, and then consumed their crews. Captain Pike was nearly dealt the same fate, until his crew overcame the Ngultor, rescuing the captain and saving themselves. Captain Pike experienced memory aberration, causing him to suffer from flashbacks while in the Ngultor starship-colony. ("Flesh of My Flesh" [Marvel EV #1]).
Niagara-class.
Type of Federation starship. A three-nacelled dreadnought type vessel, ships of this structure included the Princeton, Wellington and, presumably, the Niagara. ("The Best of Both Worlds" [TNG]). The Niagara model was built and subsequently damaged by Greg Jein for the graveyard scene at Wolf 359. Some photos of the studio model are all that exists of the ship's structure. Due to the efforts of Bernd Schneider and the Wolf 359 Research Project at Ex Astris Scientia, several thories about the vessel's size, scale and structure have been put forth. The 3D model of the Niagara is courtesy of Trekmania.
Niagara, U.S.S.
Federation starship, prototype for the Niagara-class. (Conjecture).
Niantic, U.S.S.
Federation starship, Detroyat-class heavy destroyer, Starfleet registry NCC-1105. The Niantic was reclassified as an escort in the 2250s, and later reclassified for a scout mission profile. Niantic was the only Detroyat lost in the line of duty, disappearing in the M-370 star system shortly after rendezvous with the starship Constellation. Although no wreckage was ever found, there is a high degree of probability that the Niantic also fell victim to the planet-killer that the Constellation fell to. (U.S.S. Detroyat Class Heavy Destroyer Blueprints; Ships of the Star Fleet vol.1).

The colony, established in 2268, was a dismal failure, although the settlement remained in place for at least two decades. The Vulcan exile Sybok began his quest or Sha Ka Ree there. ("The Final Frontier" [Movie #5]).

In 2374, this vessel was involved with fighting on the Dominion front and submitted casualty reports which were received by Deep Space 9. ("Interface" [TNG]; "In the Pale Moonlight" [DS9 #143]). This vessel's name and registry is derived from Okuda's Encyclopedia. The Nobel was named after Alfred Nobel, Swedish industrialist, inventor of dynamite, and founder of the Nobel Prize. The "In the Pale Moonlight" names and status reports came from a casualty report shown in a background computer display.
Noel, Helen.
Psychiatric specialist who served as a medical officer aboard the starship Enterprise in the beginning of its five-year mission. ("Dagger of the Mind" [TOS]).
Nog.
Starfleet lieutenant, chief of operations aboard Space Station Deep Space Nine. Nog, the son of Grand Nagus Rom, is the first Ferengi to serve in Starfleet. Nog is the nephew of Quark, who operates the bar on DS9. In 2369 Nog, learning business, acquired a large quantity of surplus yamok sauce through his employment at his uncle's bar, exchanging it several times, until he and his friend Jake Sisko owned a strip of empty land on Bajor, which they sold the the Bajoran Provisional Government under the name Noh-Jay Consortium. In 2372, Nog became the first Ferengi to enter Starfleet Academy, where he was a member of Omega Squadron. During his first day as a cadet, Nog was accidentally briefly transported back in time the the year 1947 to Roswell, New Mexico, in his uncle's shuttle. Nog did not impress his fellow cadets by causing a major holodeck malfunction during the beginning of freshman classes, by installing illicit Ferengi software sent to him by Quark. After the Dominion made an attempt to assault Federation telepaths which caused the Omega cadets to violate General Order Seven, Nog was not executed, but instead assigned to field study on Deep Space Nine (as a diplomatic move to avoid upsetting Federation-Ferengi relations). The cadets were later acquitted, but Nog did not return to the Academy for his junior year because of the beginning of the Dominion War. Nog was awarded a field commission of ensign from Captain Benjamin Sisko, and was assigned to the starship Defiant during the worst of the war, Operation: Return and the later Chin'toka campaigns. Nog also serves as temporary engineering officer aboard the starship Valiant on its last mission, and was one of few survivors. During trench warfare on AR-558, Nog was wounded by Jem'Hadar weapons and lost his leg before being evacuated to the starship Veracruz. He currently serves with a prosthetic. Nog had a difficult time adjusting to post-traumatic stress disorders, losing himself in holodeck fantasies for some time before he was able to competently return to duty. Towards the end of the Dominion War, Nog again found himself present at many historic events, such as the second Chin'toka campaigns and the taking of Cardassia Prime. After the Accords were signed, Nog was promoted to lieutenant junior-grade, and was transferred to Starbase Deep Space Nine, his childhood home, to replace Miles O'Brien, his mentor, as chief of operations. Nog has a close working relationship with new Andorian science officer Thirishar ch'Thane. Nog's serial number begins with CX-937.
In an alternate future timeline created in 2372, Captain Benjamin Sisko disappeared into a temporal rift and left Kira in charge of the station, at the beginning of the Klingon-Federation War. Sisko's son Jake would eventually be forced  return to Earth("Emissary" [DS9 #1&2]; "Progress" [DS9]; "Little Green Men" [DS9]; "The Ascent" [DS9]; "Rocks and Shoals" [DS9]; "Favor the Bold" [DS9]; "Valiant" [DS9]; "The Siege of AR-558" [DS9]; "It's Only a Paper Moon" [DS9]; "What You Leave Behind" [DS9]; "Avatar" [Pocket DS9]; "Prime Directives" [Marvel SA#1]). Norway-class starship
Norway-class starshipNorway-class.
Type of Federation starship in use in the late 24th century measuring 335 meters in length. As a cutter type vessel, the Norway-class is designed to patrol, police and defend the Federation's borders. In this role it is necessary for the vessel to have short duration high speed engines for pursuit, and to operate independantly for long patrol cruises. The Norways are smaller, faster starships designed to only require a small crew. For the tracking of borderspace, Norway-class ships have enhanced sensor, tracking and communication ability, and also posess advanced tractor and docking abilities for the towing and boarding of other vessels. This class includes the starships Budapest, Bozeman-A (formerly the Roderick) and, presumably, the Norway. ("First Contact" [Movie #8]).
