Date & Chronology Information:There are several conflicting dates in this novel, in several sections. The original sequence is of Ensign Stiles being stranded on the Pojjana world. His rescue takes place four years later, and then the main sequence eleven years after that, during the mission of the Enterprise-D. Riker orders a check of the ships log for 'three years ago' beginning on SD 41099, placing that in the first season and the novel in the fourth season. This is also three years after the events of "Vectors" [Pocket TNG], but aside from being during the Cardassian occupation I have no chronology information for it. However, the Romulan defector is said to have been murdered on Deep Space Nine, and Deep Space Nine did not exist until 2369. So this novel must take place during the sixth or seventh season of Star Trek: The Next Generation. However, this clashes with the 'three years' reference, unless Carey's stardate is simply in error. Final analysis: Part One: 2354-55; Part Two: 2358-59; Part Three: 2369-2370.
Synopsis: Like the biological weapons they employ, a sinister conspiracy has spread across the Alpha Quadrant and across many years of Starfleet History. Now the mysterious menace surfaces again -- to strike at the heart of the Romulan Empire. An artificial virus has infected the entire Romulan ruling family. Ambassador Spock must put aside his efforts at unification to summon his old friend, Dr. Leonard McCoy, who discovers that the only hope for a cure lies with a long lost Romulan heir whose blood and tissues have not been contaminated by the virus. But can the heir be found before the collapse of a ruling dynasty throws the entire Empire into chaos?

Captain's Comments & Nitpicks: Comment: Another winner from Diane Carey. This book is off the beaten path of Star Trek, dealing with political intrigue and the nuts-and-bolts lives of many characters who aren't as much adventurers like our main cast. The milieu of Eric Stiles is so interesting to me, I didn't even realize that this was another big Trek event.. the reunion of TOS and TNG cast members. If anything, this novel could have been helped, pacing-wise, by being made into a series, for all the interest it had for me. Nitpick: The Lexington, encountered by Stiles and McCoy sometime between 2358 or 2359 (depending on interpretation of the dates) is said to be Galaxy-class. One more reference to a Galaxy-class ship that needs to be ignored, and the second in the Double Helix series. Carey apparently hasn't read up on her Next Generation ship types, or she'd know there were only six original ships of that class, the first being commissioned in 2363, and none of them was named Lexington. Comment: By the way, this is the Original Series part of the Double Helix crossover, and the dialogue between Spock and McCoy, technically guest stars, is great as 'living legends' kind of stuff, especially as Spock tries to diffuse the hero worship of Stiles. Nitpick: The Pocket copywriters obviously aren't huge fans... on the book excerpt they print that this is a 'Delta Quadrant' novel, rather than the Alpha Quadrant event that it is.
